Hydrogen water is regular water infused with extra molecular hydrogen (H2), the smallest and lightest molecule in existence. The water itself is unchanged - it simply carries more dissolved hydrogen gas than plain water does. It isn't carbonated, it isn't alkaline water, and it isn't a new kind of water. That's genuinely all it is.
What is molecular hydrogen (H2)?
Hydrogen is the first element on the periodic table and the most abundant in the universe. Two hydrogen atoms bond to form a molecule of hydrogen gas, written H2. Because that molecule is so small, it moves and dissolves in ways larger molecules can't. In hydrogen water, H2 gas is dissolved into ordinary water.
How is hydrogen water different from normal water?
The only difference is the amount of dissolved H2. Plain tap and bottled water contain almost none. Hydrogen water has more of it added - through electrolysis, a reactive tablet, or a drink mix. The taste, look and feel are the same as normal water; the hydrogen is invisible and flavourless.
Is hydrogen water the same as alkaline water?
No, and this is the most common mix-up. Alkaline water is about pH - how acidic or basic the water is. Hydrogen water is about dissolved hydrogen gas. A water can be one, both or neither. If someone's selling "alkaline hydrogen water," those are two separate properties bundled together.
Is hydrogen water carbonated or fizzy?
No. Carbonated water gets its bubbles from carbon dioxide under pressure. In hydrogen water the hydrogen is dissolved as a gas without that fizz, so it drinks like flat water. (Some tablets and mixes produce visible bubbles as they react - that's the hydrogen being released as it dissolves, not permanent carbonation.)
How is hydrogen water made?
Three main ways: electrolysis bottles and machines that split water to add hydrogen; tablets that react in water to release it; and drink-mix sachets that release molecular hydrogen as they dissolve. They differ a lot in price, convenience and upkeep. Bottles vs tablets vs sachets.
What does the research say?
Molecular hydrogen is a genuine and active area of scientific study, and you'll see a lot of bold claims online. Much of the marketing runs ahead of what's actually been established. We've written a separate, balanced piece on what the evidence does and doesn't currently show, without the hype. Is hydrogen water legit, or hype?
How can I try hydrogen water?
The simplest, lowest-cost entry is a hydrogen-releasing drink mix - no device to buy or maintain. Fluence Base 250 is an Australian-made sachet that releases molecular hydrogen as it dissolves, with electrolytes and flavour, zero sugar, non-carbonated. Tear, pour, drink. Explore Base 250.
Frequently asked questions
What does hydrogen water taste like?
The same as normal water - dissolved hydrogen is flavourless.
Is hydrogen water just a gimmick?
Molecular hydrogen is real and studied; the honest answer on benefits is that research is ongoing. See our evidence page.
Can you make hydrogen water at home?
Yes - with an electrolysis bottle, a tablet, or a drink mix like Base 250.
Is hydrogen water safe to drink daily?
It's water with more dissolved hydrogen; molecular hydrogen is considered safe to consume. Follow the product label.
