Walk into any Australian servo and the fridge tells a story: a wall of sports drinks in colours not found in nature, most of them carrying more sugar than people realise. Walk into the same store's supplement aisle and you will find the newer story: zero-sugar electrolyte powders and sachets. So which one should be in your bottle?
The honest answer is that they are different tools, and each one has days when it is the right choice. This article lays out the differences without pretending one category is evil and the other is magic. And before either category: on an ordinary, low-sweat day, plain water is enough for most people. Electrolytes and sports drinks alike earn their place when you sweat.
What a sports drink actually is
A traditional sports drink (Gatorade, Powerade and their peers) is really two products in one bottle:
- A carbohydrate delivery system. Sugars at around 6 per cent concentration, designed to be absorbed quickly and fuel working muscles.
- A modest electrolyte top-up. Some sodium and potassium, usually far less than a dedicated electrolyte product.
That design is not an accident and it is not a scam. It was built for a specific scenario: prolonged, hard exercise where you need fuel and fluid at the same time.
The sugar ledger
Here is what the labels say, and this is the part most people have never actually read:
- Gatorade (600mL bottle): roughly 30-36g of sugars depending on variant, in the region of 8-9 teaspoons (check the label)
- Powerade (600mL bottle): a similar order of magnitude on the standard label (check your variant)
- Hydralyte (made-up dose): glucose-based sugars included deliberately, with the exact amount on the label, for clinical-style rehydration
- Zero-sugar electrolyte powders (Base 250 and most modern competitors): 0g
For context, the World Health Organization suggests limiting free sugars to under about 50g per day for an average adult, and ideally under 25g for additional benefits. One 600mL sports drink can account for most of the lower figure on its own. If you are drinking sports drinks at your desk, that is not sports nutrition, it is a soft drink with better marketing.
None of that makes the sugar inherently bad. It makes it a fuel, and fuel only makes sense when the engine is running hard.
When a sports drink is genuinely the right tool
We sell a zero-sugar electrolyte product, so believe us when we say this against interest: sometimes the sugary bottle is the correct choice.
Sports nutrition research, including work summarised by Asker Jeukendrup, generally supports consuming carbohydrate during exercise once sessions extend beyond roughly 60 to 90 minutes, with intakes commonly in the range of 30 to 60g per hour, and more for very long events. If you are:
- running or riding for more than about 90 minutes,
- playing a full match of footy, soccer or tennis in the heat,
- doing back-to-back endurance sessions where refuelling matters,
then a carbohydrate-plus-electrolyte drink is doing exactly what it was designed for. The sugar is not a flaw in that context; it is the point. Sports Dietitians Australia's fluid guidance makes the same distinction: match the drink to the demands of the session.
Similarly, oral rehydration solutions like Hydralyte use glucose deliberately, because glucose helps the gut absorb sodium and water when you are dehydrated from illness. Different tool again, and the right one for gastro or fever days.
When zero-sugar electrolytes make more sense
Now the other side of the ledger. Most exercise Australians actually do is not a 90-minute endurance event. It is:
- a 45-minute gym session,
- a lunchtime run,
- a hot day of physical work or a long walk,
- a sauna, a fasting morning, a long-haul flight.
In those scenarios you sweat, and sweat takes sodium, potassium and magnesium with it, but you do not need 36g of sugar to get home. You already have the fuel on board. What you lost was water and electrolytes, so replace water and electrolytes.
That is the entire logic of the zero-sugar electrolyte lane, and of Base 250 specifically: each 6g sachet delivers 250mg sodium, 250mg potassium, 60mg magnesium and 40mg vitamin C, with zero sugar, zero calories and no artificial colours. It is non-carbonated, so it disappears into a normal water bottle, and it replaces electrolytes lost through sweat without a caloric side effect. It is built for daily use rather than for race day.
Base 250 has one other point of difference worth knowing about: its elemental magnesium reacts with water to release dissolved molecular hydrogen, one of the most studied molecules in wellness science. Research suggests molecular hydrogen may support antioxidant capacity, lower perceived exertion and aid recovery - the science is promising but still developing. A simple decision framework
- Session over 90 minutes, or hard match play in heat: sports drink, or electrolytes plus separate carbs. You need fuel.
- Session under an hour, hot day, sauna, manual work, travel, fasting: water plus a zero-sugar electrolyte serve covers the losses without the sugar.
- Sick with vomiting or diarrhoea: an oral rehydration solution from the pharmacy, and see a doctor if it persists.
- Sedentary day, mild weather, normal meals: water. Genuinely, just water.
One more scenario deserves a mention. Some people using appetite-reducing medications prescribed for weight management find they eat and drink noticeably less, which can make it harder to keep up fluids and electrolytes through food. If that is you, this is a conversation to have with your prescribing doctor before changing anything about your routine; they can advise whether an electrolyte product has a place in your plan.
The bottom line
Sports drinks are not the villain and electrolyte powders are not a cure-all. Sports drinks are fuel-plus-fluid for long, hard sessions. Zero-sugar electrolytes are fluid-plus-minerals for the sweaty parts of ordinary life. Buy the tool that matches your actual week, not the one with the best ad.
